The SNT: Superficial Nontype
Filmmaker Judd Apatow has created story lines with many NTs who do not look like leading men but still manage to capture our hearts as they awkwardly get the girl. There’s chubby and goofy Seth Rogen in the 2007 hit Knocked Up, who plays the leading man to beautiful Katherine Heigl, and geeky and uncomfortable nice guy Steve Carell in The 40 Year Old Virgin, who pairs up with smart and sexy Catherine Keener.
The superficial nontype (SNT) is the guy who is rarely on any woman’s checklist. He doesn’t feel like an immediate match when you first meet him, because he is too short, too tall, too skinny, or too fat; has bad hair or no hair; is a bad dresser; doesn’t make enough money; or just simply seems wrong for you at first glance. Simply put, this NT may not inspire immediate chemistry.
The SNT possesses some of the most important qualities you’re looking for in a mate but falls short in some of the external qualities that you generally imagined your future husband would have. When you realize you have feelings for this nontype, you surprise yourself—you may have thought you were more superficial than you actually are! This should be good news, but it momentarily freaks you out. You realize that you have to let go of the image of the perfect-looking man if you are to be with your SNT, but you are willing to do so because of how you feel around this person. What you used to find icky—like running your hands through a thinning hairline or kissing a guy who meets you at eye level—doesn’t seem like such a big deal once you’ve fallen for this man.
